Despite a "suggestion" from the US Department of Justice, the Department of the Interior, and President Barack Obama for work to halt on the Dakota Access Oil Pipeline, construction continues pursuant to an order from a federal judge that denied the Standing Rock Sioux Nation's appeal to shut it down.
Up to 12,000 Native Americans and their supporters, from many diverse races and ethnicities, are still encamped in the area, and they say that they are not going anywhere until their demands met.
In the past week North Dakota Governor Jack Dalrymple called out the National Guard after protests turned violent when private military contractors hired by the DAPL attacked peaceful protestors with pepper spray and vicious dogs, indiscriminately attacking men, women, and children. The State of North Dakota has launched an investigation into the actions of the mercenaries hired by the pipeline.
Arrest warrants for Green Party Presidential candidate Jill Stein and Democracy Now! reporter Amy Goodman have been issued, charging them with criminal trespass and, in Stein's case, criminal mischief for spray painting the words "I approve this message" onto a bulldozer blade when she came to show her support.
